University of Texas grad and longtime Longhorns fan Andrew relived his college game days with one small twist—watching the game in Matthew McConaughey’s suite… with Matthew McConaughey. Get the scoop on the nail-biting Texas vs. Notre Dame game below.
How was Matthew’s suite?
First off, there was air conditioning which was really nice because it was such a hot day. Matt told us that they’ve had this box for over 20 years and we were the first people outside to ever join them besides a tight-knit group of family and close friends! Pretty much everyone in the suite was a Texas grad except for Matthew’s publicist’s husband who is actually a former Notre Dame football player, so it was a fun rivalry.
Wow that’s so cool! What were Matthew and his family like?
The whole family is hilarious and so nice. I met his wife and kids, and got to see him teach his youngest son Livingston how to do the “hook ‘em horns” for the first time. We also got to meet his mom, Kay McConaughey, but she goes by KMac. She’s a hip lady, just wild Longhorns fan screaming with the rest of us.
What did you talk to Matthew about?
Mostly about football in general and the game. When Matthew was asking my friend and I which one of us was the winner, he asked “Which one of ya’ll has the grandma that likes you to take her to Hooters to watch football games? Man, that’s funny. But it would be funnier if you told everyone she was the original Hooters girl.” Even his mom laughed at that! He also told us about his teaching gig at UT that’s a higher level television and film class. It’s about everything that happens between the words being put on the page as a script and what shows up as the final product.
How was the game?
It was absolutely insane. At the beginning of the game, they turned the cameras onto our suite and put Matthew and all of us on the jumbotron. The whole stadium just went nuts. The suite is right above the student section near the end zone, and every single kid in that student section turned around and looked. To be up there and watch a Longhorn game with Matthew McConaughey and his family and friends was just like hitting the jackpot. Then to have the game be the best Longhorn home game EVER just made it feel like winning a second jackpot. It was so incredible.
What was the coolest moment?
Just to witness Matthew and the incredibly unique power he had over the energy level of the whole stadium. Towards the end of the game, when we were on defense and needed a stop, all he had to do was lean over the railing and yell “C’mon, let’s go!” and the students would start yelling and that just spread to the entire stadium.
Anything you want to say to your fellow Omazers?
Of course I loved the prize, but one of the things that drew me to (RED) was just the whole movement, and making it easier to give to great causes really makes me happy. It was truly an unforgettable weekend.
We’re so glad you had a day that was more than alright, alright, alright, Andrew! Thank you so much for supporting (RED).
