Randy and his wife got the VIP treatment when they flew out to Vegas to see boxers Canelo Álvarez and Gennady Golovkin face off. Read on to hear all about their knock-out trip:
What was it like right when you got there?
We got to the hotel and hung out there for the evening. And the next day we got our access passes and went to Radio Row. We got to see how the radio stations work behind the scenes and we met some celebrities and former boxers. It was really neat!
And then you went to the weigh-in before the fight?
Correct. That same day we went over to see the weigh-in, which was really an experience! I wasn’t expecting such a crowd for just a weigh-in. I was told some people had been waiting in line since early in the morning just to get in! There was a lot of electricity just for a weigh-in, which was really exciting. We had really great seats, saw some more celebrities and got to take a picture holding one of the belts.
What celebrities did you see over there?
At Radio Row, we got to meet former boxers Roy Jones Jr. and Gerry Cooney and Stephen A. Smith from ESPN.
How was the pre-fight party?
Oh, it was great! There was an open bar—I took advantage of that! It was a really nice environment. We took some photos. We met Tracy Morgan and took a picture with him. We saw one of the guys from the movie Barbershop, and got a picture with him. We also saw Omar Benson Miller from the HBO show Ballers.
How was the fight?
The fight itself was just awesome! You know, we saw how electric it was just for the weigh-in. The fight itself was 10 times that! The crowd was really into it and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! This was my first live boxing match. I watch on TV all the time, but this is the first one I saw live, and I was into it the whole way through. I saw every punch that was thrown and I absolutely loved it! I told my wife, “From here on out, nothing I watch on TV will top this!” The seats we had exceeded my expectations—we had a great view.
What would you say the highlight of the whole experience was?
Goodness, do I have to pick just one?! One of the best things for me was getting to meet some of the former boxers, getting to shake their hand and take a picture with them was really neat. Seeing how Radio Row and those guys work was really cool. And, of course, going to the fight itself was the icing on the cake.
Do you have anything else you want to say to your fellow fans and the Omaze community?
I just want to say that it’s possible to win something like this. And it’s great to be able to donate to such wonderful causes. My wife kept saying one “wow!” after another. I’m very thankful that I won and I must say, I took advantage of every minute of it!
Thanks, Randy! We’re glad your first live boxing match was as exciting as this one. And thanks to all of you for supporting two incredible causes: SEE International, which works to restore sight and provide high-quality vision care around the world, and UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, which serves the most critically ill children with sophisticated, compassionate care in an environment welcoming and healing to children and their families.
