This past summer, we offered you the chance to walk with Channing Tatum on the red carpet at the premiere of Magic Mike XXL. Your incredible contributions supported the Runa Foundation, whose work benefits and protects farming communities in the Amazon, as well as their environment and resources.
The money you raised is going toward PlantMed, a branch of the Runa Foundation that taps into the healing potential of the Amazon and empowers local communities to share what they know about native plants and their medicinal benefits. Those are two very different—and very cool—objectives.
First, the Amazon is basically a living pharmacy. It’s full of natural remedies and treatments, but less than 5% of species have been studied for their properties! Runa is setting out to change that. The second objective is about respect. No one knows this environment better than the native people, and there’s so much we can learn from them. Runa is working to make sure they’re heard and their ideas are implemented.
Over the next year, they’re building two health centers where Western researchers and traditional Amazonian healers will work side-by-side to research both medicinal plants and traditional practices used to treat illnesses.
